Highline Community College to kick off free tax help with Super Refund Saturday

Free tax return services begin February 4 at Highline

DES MOINES, Wash. — KeyBank, United Way of King County and Highline Community College are coming together to help tax payers breathe easier by hosting “Super Refund Saturday” on February 4. This one-day event will provide free income tax preparation to low- and moderate-income (LMI) wage earners, especially those who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Free tax return assistance will also be available for small businesses that report on a Schedule C.

EITC pays eligible low- and moderate-income tax payers amounts ranging up to $5,751.  However, 15 to 25 percent of eligible households miss out on EITC benefits they are entitled to receive, income tax experts report.

Key’s Community Development Banking is sponsoring simultaneous “Super Refund Saturdays” in 16 other cities across the U.S., in partnership with local nonprofits. Each year, hundreds of KeyBank employees volunteer their time to help local taxpayers file their taxes and claim the EITC. Last year, 280 KeyBank staff members across the country assisted 1,500 households in processing $3.6 million in tax refunds.

“Super Refund Saturday” will be the first of many free tax return services that will be offered on Highline Community College’s campus.  Highline’s Startzone Department will be opening its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Center each Thursday and Saturday through April 17th in the Highline Outreach Center (Building 99).  No appointments are necessary. Visit https://startzone.highline.edu for directions, times and details.

For more information on “Super Refund Saturday” contact KeyBank representatives Mike Fait at (253) 906-9120 or Anne Foster at (425) 709-4327.  For general information on free tax services available through Highline’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Center contact Michael Skinner at (206) 878-3710, ext. 3344.

Highline Community College was founded in 1961 as the first community college in King County. With approximately 18,900 annual students and 350,000 alumni, it is one of the state’s largest institutions of higher education. The college offers a wide range of academic transfer and professional-technical education programs, with day, evening and weekend classes. Alumni include former Seattle Mayor Norm Rice, entrepreneur Junki Yoshida and Washington state poet laureate Sam Green.
